The Way We Were – RTE coverage of the Introduction of Parking Meters in Dublin

RTE reporter stands beside Duncan parking meters as he talks abou ttheir introduction to Dublin in 1969

‘I think parking meters are a very bad idea, really, because at the moment, you can’t really park anywhere anyhow; and if you have parking meters it’s going to make the problem worse’.

It’s safe to say that when Dublin Council introduced parking meters South of the Liffey in 1968, they weren’t universally welcomed.

As you can see in these clips from the RTE Archives, their arrival received a mixed reaction from the public.

UTS Technologies was centrally involved in the process, as our predecessor company Henry Spring & Co. were tasked with rolling out the new Duncan machines that became a staple of the city landscape over the coming decades.
